Certain songs evoke different emotions as we associate them with happy or sad memories. As part of our ongoing research into the lives of Australians and our habits at home, researchers here at Victory have reviewed top Spotify playlists to see which songs act as the soundtrack to our household habits.

Researchers were able to determine the most popular songs and artists by analysing the top playlists that included the words cleaning, cooking, DIY,  getting ready, showering, and working from home.

Top For Cleaning

For cleaning, the top artist was Billy Joel, who appeared 17 times across ten different playlists for cleaning on Spotify. Upbeat songs were a common occurrence on these playlists, with Cyndi Lauper’s classic ‘Girls just want to have fun’ being the most-streamed song.

Top For Cooking

When we cook, it seems we only want to listen to icons, with Stevie Wonder, Queen, Aretha Franklin, and Marvin Gaye all being in the top 10 most popular artists. Stevie Wonder was featured more than any other artist, appearing 20 times across the cooking playlists.

Stuart Clark, spokesperson for Victory Blinds said: “It’s interesting to see what music is top for different habits we have around our homes. It seems we like to listen to the classics when we’re cooking and doing DIY but, when it comes to getting ready, that’s when we turn to more modern music.”
